In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

3 reasons to book
  • Authentic courtyard atmosphere — Guests consistently praise the beautiful, quiet courtyard that offers a peaceful escape from the city's hustle.
  • Friendly and helpful staff — Multiple guests highlight the warm, personal service with staff often going out of their way to help with recommendations and directions.
  • Excellent location for exploring — Close to Xisi subway station and within easy reach of major sights like the Palace Museum and the lakes of Beihai and Houhai.

Worth weighing

4 to weigh
  • Small property with only 8 rooms — Given the limited number of rooms, availability is tight and the experience may feel intimate but also crowded if fully booked.
  • Thin walls and family atmosphere — The quiet, family-oriented setting means noise can travel between rooms, and late-night revelers may feel out of place.
  • Simple rooms with some quirks — Beds are noted as hard (common in China) and shower is next to the toilet in some rooms. Not luxury, but clean and functional.
  • Breakfast can be pricey — While tasty, breakfast is considered a bit expensive, which may add to the nightly cost for budget-conscious travelers.

“I really enjoyed my stay at Templeside. It felt like home. Bobbie was very friendly and helpful, showing us the best places to visit in Beijing. Two subway stations are within a 20-minute walk; we used Xisi Station daily and once took bus 7 to the zoo. We booked the VIP deluxe room.”

“A fantastic place, a quiet hutong in the middle of Beijing's chaos. Close to Beihai and Hohai but not touristy. Right next to Xisi underground. Lovely staff, especially Emma who is great fun. I'd stay again. But if you're loud and like late nights, note that families stay here and the walls are thin. Still possible to be young here though.”

“The room was very clean with great water pressure – though the shower is next to the toilet, which is typical. The bed was comfortable for China. It was quiet during my stay, but rooms open onto the courtyard. I stayed in the deluxe rather than the courtyard guest house. It was right in the heart of the hutong. I couldn't have been happier. They are my people.”

“The deluxe room was very good, breakfasts were tasty but a bit pricey even for Beijing. Good stuff.”
